Warren Brennan – Hot Spot

OldCamera1In this episode, we speak with Warren Brennan, founder of BBG Sports and inventor of Hot Spot.  Hot Spot uses thermal imaging cameras to identify contact in high-speed ball sports like cricket and baseball.  The heat generated by friction lights up the spot of contact in the video replays.  The system has been used with cricket and most recently baseball in this year’s World Series.  Though it was originally intended as a way to enhance the fan’s experience of a sport, the unique insight it brings could be a valuable tool for officiators making calls.  As with many new technologies in sports, there are those for and against implementation but Warren and his team remain focused on their original goal of developing great technology to improve the viewing experience.  There’s a cool example of the technology in action on the website BBGSports.com!

hotspotUPDATE!:  Warren just sent us some images from the recent Brisbane test match, where they were trying out some of the new cameras he mentioned in the podcast.  He says the cameras are several times more sensitive and able to nearly completely remove motion blur and it shows!  Look at the small white mark indicating contact on the bat – this is something even the earlier camera (2nd image) might miss.  Quite an improvement!
